چکیده

We identify the probable optical counterpart of the SMC supersoft source, RX J0059.2-7138, with a ∼ 14th magnitude star lying within the X-ray error circle. We present high resolution optical spectroscopy, which reveals strong HI emission and HeI absorption, indicative of a Be star. This classification is consistent with the colours we derive from optical photometry. We thus find evidence to support the existing tentative identification of this object as a Be/X-ray binary, the first of its kind to exhibit luminous supersoft X-ray emission.

Broad - Band X - Ray Study of a Transient Pulsar RX J 0059 . 2 − 7138

We report on the results of the ASCA and ROSAT observations on RX J0059.2−7138, a transient X-ray pulsar in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The barycentric pulse period has been precisely determined to be 2.763221± 0.000004 s. The pulse shape is almost identical in all of the energy bands. The pulse fraction increases with the photon energy below ∼ 2 keV, while it is nearly constant at ∼ 37% above ...

Letter to the Editor A transient supersoft X-ray source in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We present new X-ray data with an improved position for the supersoft X-ray source RX J0537.7-7034 and propose a candidate for the optical identification. The X-ray source had an “on” and an “off” state andwas variable on a time scale of months. The proposed optical counterpart is displaced by only 9 arcsec; it is a blue variable star whith an amplitude modulation in the optical light curve. Th...

A ROSAT PSPC X-Ray Survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud

We present the results of a systematic search for point-like and moderately extended soft (0.1-2.4 keV) X-ray sources in a raster of nine pointings covering a field of 8.95 deg and performed with the ROSAT PSPC between October 1991 and October 1993 in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We detect 248 objects which we include in the first version of our SMC catalogue of soft X-ray...

A multi-frequency study of the SMC region around AX J0105-722

We present a high-resolution multi-frequency study of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) region around the X-ray pulsar AX J0105-722. From ROSAT PSPC images we resolve this source into several X-ray sources. We combine X-ray, radio-continuum and optical data to identify the sources: for RX J0105.1-7211 we propose an emission line star from the catalogue of Meyssonier & Azzopardi (1993) in the X-r...

A multi-frequency identification study of the SMC X-ray binary AX J0049-732

We present a high-resolution multi-frequency identification study of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) region around the newly discovered X-ray pulsar AX J0049-732. ROSAT PSPC images show three X-ray sources near the ASCA source position. We combine X-ray, radio-continuum and optical data to identify these sources. RX J0049.2-7311 and RX J0049.5-7310 did not show long-term time variability nor p...
